Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

The Yuzaki gravesite is covered with overgrowth, to the point Tsukasa wonders if Nasa’s parents have been cleaning it. Nasa goes to get cleaning supplies. Tsukasa notes that Nasa’s grandfather was born in 1919. She says a prayer, thanking Nasa’s grandfather for not giving up on life. Because of this, she met Nasa. A little later, Nasa returns with supplies and the two clean the gravesite.

While finishing up, Tsukasa asks Nasa if he recalled what his grandfather said to him. Nasa doesn’t remember, but does recall something odd he said when Nasa was little and crying. His grandfather claimed to have met an oni. Tsukasa is dumbfounded by this. Nasa suspects it was to get him to stop crying. Tsukasa believes Nasa’s grandfather gets stranger as she learns more about him.

Nasa regrets never asking his grandfather, named Aozora, what he meant by seeing an oni. Since part of Nasa’s (kanji) name is taken from his grandfather, Tsukasa concludes that his grandfather must have been a good man. Nasa blushes and agrees.

Thoughts/Review:

Tsukasa’s reaction in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 217 to the idea that Nasa’s grandfather Aozora met an oni made me laugh out loud. And to be fair, this revelation came right out of nowhere, which is what made it funny to me. That and Tsukasa’s “what kind of errant nonsense is this” look still makes me chuckle.

And though Hata-sensei’s universe isn’t set in Inuyasha, where various youkai, including oni, existed, there were youkai in Hayate the Combat Butler. As such, I’m willing to believe that Aozora did meet an oni at some point. Tsukasa may never have seen a youkai, but if they existed in the present, they had to exist in the past. I guess we’ll find out more next chapter.

That aside, Tsukasa did the normal, Shinto prayer thing at the grave. Her prayer seems kind of odd. It made me think I’d missed something, like Nasa’s grandfather being depressed. I don’t think I missed anything. That aside, on one one hand, Aozora lived through two world wars and the Great Depression. Tsukasa lived through this as well. So she would have understood how tough it was. And I suppose suicide rates would go up during tough times. Nevertheless, she thanked Aozora for choosing to live, thus allowing her to meet Nasa.

Well, I’m probably reading too much into things. Tsukasa’s prayer was probably a general one.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 217 gives us a glimpse at Nasa’s grandfather. And as I think about it, I wonder how this will tie into the larger story. I look forward to learning that.
